Caring for Cashmere: Washing & Storage Guide

Cashmere is naturally soft, breathable and long-lasting. With considered care, it will retain its handle and shape for many years.

The guidance below reflects the methods used in our Scottish mills and covers both knitted and woven Cashmere pieces.

De-pilling comb and cedar wood balls for cashmere care

1. REMOVE PILLING

Pilling is a natural stage in the life of Cashmere as loose fibres rise to the surface. Use a Cashmere comb to gently remove pilling after the first few wears. This restores smoothness and helps the garment settle into long-term use.

2. HANDWASH FOR BEST RESULTS

For knitted Cashmere, we recommend handwashing after every three to four wears.

Use lukewarm water and a small amount of Cashmere shampoo.

Submerge the garment and allow it to soak for a few minutes.

Gently squeeze the fabric without wringing or stretching.

Rinse several times using water of the same temperature.

WHY TEMPERATURE MATTERS

Cashmere fibres respond to temperature changes. Using water that is too hot or too cold can cause shrinkage or distortion.

3. RESHAPE & DRY FLAT

Lay the garment flat on a towel. Reshape gently while damp. Avoid direct heat and never tumble dry. Once dry, iron on a cool setting using a damp cloth to protect the fibres.

HOW TO STORE CASHMERE

PREVENTING MOTHS

Store Cashmere in breathable bags or drawers. Cedar wood balls or lavender sachets act as natural moth deterrents.

MAINTAINING SHAPE

Fold Cashmere rather than hanging to prevent stretching. For seasonal storage, ensure the garment is clean and fully dry.

REPAIRING MOTH HOLES

Our partners at Cashmere Circle offer invisible mending and restoration services. This can return well-loved pieces to near-new condition.

CARING FOR WOVEN CASHMERE

Woven Cashmere — including scarves, stoles and coats — benefits from professional dry cleaning. However, occasional at-home care can help maintain freshness.

REFRESH BETWEEN CLEANS

SHAKE & AIR

Shake to remove dust and hang in fresh air to refresh.

SPOT CLEAN

For small marks, dab gently with a moist cloth and cold water. For oily stains, use a small amount of Cashmere shampoo. Fizzy water can help lift fresh marks due to its natural effervescence. Always spot-test vibrant colours in a discreet area.

DRYING

Air dry indoors or outdoors depending on weather. If the piece becomes very damp, dry it flat to maintain shape. Never tumble dry Cashmere.

CHOOSING A DRY CLEANER

If your garment has a P or F symbol on the care label, it should be dry cleaned. Many countries are phasing out Perchloroethylene (PERC), so we recommend requesting the more eco-friendly F method.

PROFESSIONAL CASHMERE CARE SERVICES

Our partners at Cashmere Circle offer garment washing, de-pilling, steaming, deep cleaning and seasonal preparation. These services help extend the life of your Cashmere and maintain its softness.
